Appleviews – 07th October 2022
Hello!
Have you got 5 to catch-up on some Apple news? If so, you are in the right place.
How’s your week been? As ever, it seems to have passed super quickly, but that is no bad thing, as it means we can assemble once more at the chapel of Appleviews. And this week, we start off we iOS updates.
Apple seeds beta updates
This past week saw Apple seeding fourth builds of iOS 16.1 and tvOS 16.1, and the fifth build of iPadOS 16.1 to testers & developers. As always, Apples advice is to not install these betas on primary or ‘mission-control’ devices.
Speaking of updates, Ventura, the new macOS, is also getting ever closer to release. Beta testers received their tenth build this week.
A full release date is yet to be confirmed for all these OS updates.
Green light for USB-C
Finally, finally, after much debate, the EU confirmed yesterday, that all smartphones sold in Europe will require a USB-C charging port from 2024. The move behind this legislation is to reduce e-waste as consumers throw out old chargers & cables when buying a new phone.
This will clearly affect Apple, who this year still used the proprietary lightning port on this iPhone 14. Ming-Chi Kuo also confirmed this week that he believes USB-C will make it’s first appearance on next year’s iPhone 15.
The Pro phones are packed with data-dense files such as Pro-Res video & Pro-Raw photo files, but lifting these files from the pro phones remains an issue. Further good news is that USB4 is set to get a speed bump as well, with data transfer speeds or 80GBps promised.
As iPhone is, by far, Apple’s biggest seller annually, a switch of this nature brings with it, its own inherent problems. Making sure they can source sufficient supplies of the USB-C controllers, for instance, is critical.
AirPods Pro Gen 2 bug
I am writing this blog post, as ever, wearing my AirPods Pro 2 – and I love ‘em!!
I noticed on Reddit this week, that some users are experiencing an issue, where they are being told, via a Find My notification to replace the battery in the case, and both left and right earbuds.
Apple is aware of the issue, and although no official statement has been released, it seems the fault is tied to the AirPods Pro 2 earbuds or charging case hitting critically low battery levels.
Luckily, I’ve not had any such notifications, but it would look like this should be a fairly simple bug to fix with an over-the-air, firmware patch.
The surprise winner is
CNBC reported this week that Foxconn are witnessing insane revenue gain on the back of ‘storming demand’ for the two pro iPhones.
Foxconn, who are the main assembly point for Apple’s iPhone, has seen a 40.4% year-on-year increase in demand, and figures 83.2% higher than the from August. Putting some numbers on those bones, Foxconn’s September revenue was $25.9 billion!
Prior to last month’s keynote from Apple, all the smart-money had been on the iPhone 14 Plus being the most popular seller. With the 14 Plus finally being released today (more on that later), it will be interesting to see where that model finally sits.
Will there be another display?
Ross Young, the display analyst guru, anticipates that Apple are primed to release another display, in the first quarter of 2023.
Ross, who was my guest on the Minus Sixteen podcast earlier this year, first spilled the beans to his super followers on Twitter. Ross, whose apples rarely drop far from the tree, forecasts that a 27-inch, mini-LED display will be with us by spring of 2023.
This new display will not be a direct replacement for the Pro-Display XDR, but will feature a 120Hz refresh rate and ProMotion. It is thought it will be more expensive than the Studio Display, however, with those prices starting at £1499.
Radio silence
Despite some rather click-baitey titles on YouTube, there is still no good reason to think there has been any change of heart from Cupertino about a keynote event being held in October.
As I wrote last week, that does not mean that we’ll not be having any more goodies from Apple this year, it’s just they won’t be delivered at an event.
The products still expecting updates include Mac’s, iPad Pro’s, and even, even, a new 4K Apple TV. The Mac Pro development is being kept under tight wraps. That may now not be rolled out until Q1, 2023, along with the long-awaited Headset.
Don’t get suckered in by misleading video titles – you know who you can trust, right?
It’s iPhone 14 release day
Nope, I have not gone totally bonkers – believe it or not, Friday 7th October marks the release date in Australia and New Zealand for Apple’s iPhone 14 Plus. Due to time-zone differences, our friends down-under are always the first to get their hands on products come release day.
As New Zealand has no official Apple Stores, Apple’s customers in Australia will be the first to get ‘hands-on’ experience with the iPhone 14 Plus. If you are reading this in Australia, what have your first impressions been of iPhone 14 Plus?
Apple cashes in
A little victory happened for Apple this week in France.
In 2020, the company were fined €1.1 billion after one of the countries premium re-sellers went out of business. At the time, they alleged that they had suffered at the hands of Apple’s uncompetitive rules. The claim was that prices were fixed by Apple on resellers, to keep in line with prices charged at Apple Stores and on Apple.com.
This week, though, after one of the three main charges related to price-fixing allegations, was dropped. The fine was significantly lowered, when the rate applied to calculate the overall fine, had been adjusted.
The final figure paid by Apple was only €373 million. A cheap get out!
That’s all I got for you this week, but I will be back at ya next Friday with more of the good stuff. Have a fantastic weekend and week ahead.
