I’m not into New Year’s resolutions – but we all need a bit more exercise, and Apple Fitness is delivering for me…
I started to use Apple Fitness+ about 18 months ago.
Apple are crafty, cunning sods…when I bought my Apple Watch Series 8 it came with a month’s free trial of their workout service. Initially, I binned it off as a waste of time then one day curiosity got the better of me.
Turns out, that was a good day – and another sub I was paying Apple!
I’ve now used it almost daily for all that time – only 10 minutes a day granted but doing a workout straight after a decent 4km walk seems a good way to round off that day’s ‘me time’.
And to coincide perfectly with the New Year and our goals to become healthier, more mindful & fitter Apple is just about to launch a whole host of new workouts on Monday 8th January.
I have just finished a 10-minute core workout with coach Kyle – so I’m in the mood to spread the Apple Fitness+ word…
What’s new then?
As per last year, Apple will be sponsoring the Halftime event at Super Bowl LVIII in February which will feature Usher.
So in the run-up to the Super Bowl, there will be a new Artist Spotlight series, there is a brand new golfers workout featuring record-breaking athlete Rose Zhang, Time To Walk has a new season coming out and Apple will also be introducing a brand-new sound meditation theme as well – and I’ll do my best to explain that one in just a moment!
The official very Apple-esque press release from Jay Blahnik, Apple’s vice president of Fitness Technologies says (in a very Apple way indeed…)
“Starting the New Year can mean kicking off a fitness and wellbeing journey, restarting after a long break, or looking to take it up a level with a new challenge. From sound meditations to help you relax, to building strength for an improved golf swing, or turning up the volume on your workouts, Fitness+ has something for everyone to help them stay active and support their wellbeing in the New Year.”
Of all the jargon and new workouts Sound Meditations for Relaxation got my attention for fairly obvious reasons – so what’s that all about?
Time to meditate
There will now be 10 meditation themes such as Calm, Sleep and Creativity and…Sound!
The new theme is aimed at helping us to feel relaxed & restored with the trainer guiding you through workouts that’ll include a variety of soothing tones, rhythms and tranquil sounds.
On release day there will be seven new Meditation workouts with more to follow over the coming weeks.
I have to be brutally honest and admit I have never tried meditation workouts – but I guess the New Year is the perfect time to try something new right? So if my stories suddenly take on a more zen tone – now you’ll know why!
Hopefully, you’re enjoying this story - if you wanted to say ‘thank you’, the best way is to clap, highlight and get involved in the comments. And my promise to you…If you get in touch I will answer! So clap, highlight and comment away…
For the swingers
Strength Core and Yoga for Golfers is a new series of workouts that is about to be launched this coming Monday.
Golfers need a mixture of strength, stability, and mobility in their fitness regime to help with their swing and the ability to drive the ball powerfully. This series of workouts with golfers in mind was designed by & features Rose Zhang who’ll be joined by regular Apple Fitness trainer – my boy Kyle Ardill. The workouts have been specifically designed to help with the golfer’s game.
Jump to the beat
Music is a key part of all the Apple Fitness+ workouts – you can try to pick music that best suits your tastes or moods with most genres catered to.
The Artist Spotlight series takes that integration one step further whereby an entire workout will feature – yup you’ve guessed it music from just one artist. USHER will be the featured artist at this year’s Apple Music Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show but the other new Artist Spotlight workouts will feature music from other iconic halftime performers including Rihanna, Britney Spears and U2.
USHER’s workout will come out on Monday 5th February – just a few days before this year’s Super Bowl at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada on Sunday 11th February.
Walk away from it…
I love the Time To Walk series of audio workouts available on both iPhone and Apple Watch. I think I must’ve listened to most of them over the past year. They’ve had some amazing guests including Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, Jason Segal, Dolly Parton, Stephen Fry & Hannah Waddingham.
The concept behind the series is simple – each episode features a celebrity guest and is around 30 minutes long. We get to walk along with them as they recount stories of their lives and careers sharing photos which pop up on your Apple Watch and some of their favourite music at the end of the walk.
I often use these as I walk rather than listening to podcasts. Even if I’ve not heard of the guest it’s a great way to hear new stories and perspectives – trust me, they’re pretty addictive.
This season of Time To Walk on Apple Fitness+ will feature some new guests including Al Rocker from the legendary Today Show, Trixie Mattel, author Lilly Singh and Colman Domingo the star of TV series such as Euphoria & Rustin.
From Monday if you have an Apple Fitness+ plan you’ll now be able to listen to these walks as podcasts via the Apple Podcasts app. 50 episodes will be available at first and even as a podcast, you’ll be able to follow along with the guest’s selection of music and photos from within the Fitness+ app on your iPhone.
Just before sitting down to write this, I did a Time To Walk workout and today I listened to David Oyelowo – a British actor with an amazing voice who you may know from films like The Butler, Rise of the Planet of the Apes…oh..and he played Martin Luther King in Selma!
I tell you no lies I love these workouts! On my list to listen to are Goldie Hawn, Gloria Estefan and Jessica Williams. And if you don’t care about your joints too much there is also a Time To Run series available too.
Apple Fitness+ rewards
Apple has decided to reward you with a New Year’s gift in January.
If you manage to close all three Activity rings for seven straight days in January then you get this limited-edition Ring to prove what you’ve achieved. A flex if ever there was one…
Apple Fitness+ is available as a subscription service for £9.99 per month or £79.99 per year and can be shared with up to five other family members. I have it as part of my Apple One bundle to save a few extra quid.
I’m not trying to say Apple Fitness+ is better than a gym membership – but it’s sure as hell more convenient and gives you one less excuse to not workout.
Buy a mat and some dumbbells and suddenly you have all you need at home to get some varied and decent session done. And if you’ve got a bike or rowing machine languishing in the shed or garage there are even workouts that will utilise those as well.
Apple Fitness+ surprised me – typical of Apple they’ve nailed it and they are filmed beautifully as well!
Give it a go and let me know what you make of it.
